Hello! My name is Anna, and I am pursuing a PhD on the role of moral rhetoric in political communication. My research focuses on how populist parties use moral appeals and how those appeals resonate with their voters. Because morality can be such a powerful persuasive tool it fascinates me. I aim to understand how populist politicians utilize it and what that reveals about why populist communication connects with people and draws them to populist parties.
Since my work involves extensive non-fiction reading, I like to unwind with fiction in my free time. I also enjoy creative writing. Beyond reading and writing, I love going out and dancing, preferably all night long.

Sweeney is a PhD candidate at ASCoR’s Persuasive Communication department at the University of Amsterdam. She is studying the occurrences and impact of greenwashed claims by social media influencers, and further, the role of parasocial relationship in persuasive attempts. Ultimately, she aims to design an intervention to lessen the persuasive power of greenwashed messages posted by influencers. Other than the effect of social media content, she is also interested in research exploring the uses and impact of innovative technologies such as extended realities and video games.
Outside of academia, she is into video gaming, music (musicals, all kinds of concerts, occasionally playing instruments and singing herself). She loves her cat sisi and she will bring her up somehow when meeting someone for the first time 🙂
